    Modern Mixing vs. Old School Mixing: Engage in a dynamic discussion on “In the box” vs. Console/Tape mixing approaches. Discover the unique characteristics and creative possibilities offered by each method.

    Day 1 – Afternoon Session

    Stefan Du Randt’s “In the Box” Mix: Step into the mind of a master as Stefan Du Randt shares one of his own in-the-box mixes. Gain valuable insights into his workflow, techniques, and decision-making process, setting the stage for your own creative endeavours.

    With one week between sessions, participants can apply the knowledge gained and work on their own mix projects for feedback on the 2nd Saturday.

    Day 2 – Morning Session

    Immerse yourself in the world of console mixing as you gain hands-on experience with the legendary SSL K mixing console in Studio 2. This console has been used by mixing engineers worldwide to create some of the most iconic albums in history, and it is the perfect tool for learning the art of console mixing.

    Stefan Du Randt will guide you through the intricacies of the SSL K console, helping you refine your skills and techniques. You can do your own balance on the console with Stewart Geddes, another experienced mixing engineer, providing engineering assistance.

    Join GRAMMY-nominated and ARIA-winning producer, engineer and mixer Adrian Breakspear (Gang of Youths, Boy and Bear, Johnny Hunter, Pharrell) for an exclusive Two-Day Masterclass at Studios 301 in Sydney.

    Recording a live band in Studio 1, Adrian will take a practical deep dive into his engineering, recording and production approach whilst making a record in real-time. This masterclass will be an incredible learning experience with Adrian sharing his knowledge and techniques, enabling the event’s participants to develop their professional practice and explore new musical territory.

    The classes are scheduled to start at 10am and finish at approx. 6pm (if more time is needed, the session may be extended).

    Day 1 (10am – 6pm) will include:

    • Approaching a recording session – the role of the producer and engineer, the session’s aim, and the process of recording a live band in the studio
    • Demonstration and discussion of recording setup for band recording – drums/bass guitar
    • Microphone selection and positioning, gain staging, processing on the record path
    • Getting the monitor mixes right
    • Initial takes recording the instrumental “bed” tracks – recording the band live in the studio, capturing and editing drums, replacing (or keeping) the other elements

    About Adrian Breakspear

    Adrian Breakspear is a Sydney-based GRAMMY-nominated and ARIA-winning producer, engineer and mixer whose credits include Gang of Youths, Boy and Bear, Johnny Hunter, Ricky Martin and Pharrell.

    Adrian began his career in London in 2001 and spent 11 years working in some of London’s most iconic studios, including MilocoStrongroom and Abbey Road. In 2012 Adrian moved to Sydney, where he was the in-house engineer for Sony Music and freelanced with artists across many genres for nine years. He is currently making his wealth of knowledge and experience available as a part of the Studios 301 roster of engineers and producers.

    In 2017 Adrian won the ‘Producer of the Year’ ARIA Award for his work on Gang of Youths’ sophomore album, ‘Go Farther in Lightness’. Adrian also has two ARIA ‘Engineer of the Year’ nominations and a Grammy Nomination for his work on Pharrell’s chart-topping album, ‘G I R L’.

    Join us to learn from composer, founder and CEO of Primerchord Production Music, Amara Primero on how to maximise your sync opportunities in the industry. This 4-week course will take you through in detail what it takes to go from writing, composing and producing music to landing it in the hands of the right people who can get your music placed on film, tv and radio.

    Session 4: Getting down to business: A session focussing on turning the musical “product” into a business. How to practically go about writing music and staying consistent, for maximum placement. Also an opportunity to submit final compositions for sync consideration.

    About Amara Primero

    APRA AMCOS Ambassador

    Amara Primero is a screen composer, currently working on a slate of shows in Australia and the USA, where she has worked and collaborated with some of the industry’s most acclaimed TV directors and producers. Amara was the Winner of the Los Angeles Cinematography Awards (LACA) 2019 for Best Original Music Score (Stille Nacht) and a Finalist in the 2019 Music + Sounds Awards. She was the composer on the 2022 feature documentary, “Shane,” on the late Shane Warne (Amazon Prime Video).

    Amara is also the founder and director of Primerchord Production Music. Primerchord has supplied music for TV shows, including Bondi Rescue, Discovery’s, Sydney Harbour Force, Outback Car Hunters, The Repair Shop Australia and Amazon’s Making the Cut (a Project Runway Spinoff).

    Day 1: Vocal Recording

    This session will focus primarily on recording and capturing final vocals in a session. Simon will cover topics such as setting up a session, recording techniques, microphone selection and placement, working with vocalists, getting the best out of vocal takes, comping takes on the fly and more. With a vocalist, Simon will record a vocal and practically guide you through his process.

    Day 2: Vocal Editing & Production

    In this session, Simon will focus on production of the final vocal after your recording session. Topics include vocal editing tools and concepts, choosing the right takes, comping vocals, pitch correction, adding FX, background vocals, time-alignment, and the mixing and production of the final vocal.

    Day 3: Tips & Tricks + in-depth Q&A

    In this session, Simon will cover the remaining techniques that you can implement to produce world-class vocal tracks that will make your songs stand out from the rest.
    He will cover additional vocal recording and production techniques including creating vocal chops and delay throws, extreme effects, how to work through situations that may not have arisen during the demonstration session and answer all your questions about how to get that pop sound.

    George “Spanky” McCurdy is a world-renowned drummer and up-and-coming producer who is well-versed across a broad spectrum of musical styles.  A proud native of North Philadelphia, Spanky has performed with the likes of Sean “Diddy” Combs, Lady Gaga, Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, and Kanye West.  He has also collaborated with artists such Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, Brandy, Queen Latifah, Nas, Q-Tip and Tye Tribbett.

    For 6 years, Spank served as the lead drummer for Lady Gaga, including during her incredibly successful “The Monster Ball Tour,” which grossed close to a quarter of a billion dollars.  He also performed with Lady Gaga at the 2016 Oscars, during her ground-breaking performance. In May 2013, Spanky and Hudson Music released an instructional DVD on drumming called “Off Time/On Time”. Spanky was featured on the December 2013 cover of Modern Drummer Magazine.

    Spanky’s unique musical aura was fostered at an early age.  He grew up watching the choir director at his local church, and funneled the passion of gospel music towards cultivating his own fearless approach to drumming and producing. Spanky’s first self titled album Circa LXXXI debuted at #68 on the iTunes R&B Soul Charts. His dynamic style, on and off kit, have given Spank the title as one of the top musicians today.

    Owner and CEO of Studios 301, Tom Misner’s passion for music is legendary. Whether as an engineer, musician, producer, educator or studio designer, his experience extends over 40 years. His name of course is widely recognised as the founder and driving force behind the world’s largest creative media education group, SAE Institute – earning him honorary doctorates from Middlesex University in 2001 and from Columbia University in 2005 for his services to transnational education.
