  • ‘Mastered for iTunes (MFiT)’ rebrands as ‘Apple Digital Masters (ADM)’

‘Mastered for iTunes (MFiT)’ rebrands as ‘Apple Digital Masters (ADM)’

You may have noticed that with the introduction of iOS 13 and macOS Catalina, Apple’s iTunes software application has disappeared from the Mac and been replaced by three separate apps: Apple Music, Apple TV, and Apple Podcasts. The iTunes Store does still exist, however is now housed within the Apple Music application.

In 2012, Apple introduced the ‘Mastered for iTunes’ format. Whether consumers purchased a song as a standard digital download or a Mastered for iTunes version, they still received the same AAC file from the iTunes Store. The difference lay in the files that were supplied by the mastering studio.

To receive the ‘Mastered for iTunes’ or ‘Apple Digital Master’ badge, mastering engineers and studios are required to be an Apple-certified mastering partner, and supply files where the true peak levels are below 0dbTP, 24bit, and at the highest possible sample rate. Upsampling is not permitted, however 44.1kHz is still accepted if the song is recorded at that rate. The reasoning is that the AAC encoder produces a better result from high-resolution files that do not have true peaks at or above 0dbTP.

Despite the rebrand from ‘Mastered for iTunes’ to ‘Apple Digital Masters’, mastering engineer submission guidelines remain the same and you’ll still be able to preserve the highest-possible quality master for digital distribution through Apple Music.

You can book your Apple Digital Masters here at 301 Mastering as a standalone master, or as a second format.

  • ARIA nominees, the Zela Margossian Quintet to Perform at Studios 301

ARIA nominees, the Zela Margossian Quintet to Perform at Studios 301

Appearing as part of the Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival, ARIA nominees Zela Margossian Quintet showcase a fusion of Armenian and Middle Eastern music, classical and jazz at Studios 301 on November 16th

    By Jacob Stone

Pianist Zela Margossian is an ARIA nominated musician whose area of expertise is fusing jazz and classical with the Armenian ethnic and middle eastern music that dominated her childhood in Beirut.

Playing as a quintet, Margossian’s arrangements draw the listener into her idiosyncratic world – where the ticking, circular rhythms of Armenian music and Tunisian melodies trade places with improvisational jazz and classical techniques.

It’s a passionate area of study for the pianist, who balances the technical prowess in classical music attained at the Lebanese Higher State Conservatory and the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory (where she earned a Master’s degree in piano performance) with the folk influence that is present in everything she composes for her Quintet.

Her debut album ‘Transition’ was a huge leap for the formerly classically-oriented player and composer, showing Margossian’s courage, broadening the scope of her compositions into territory that even the young songwriter can’t easily articulate.

“I have a structure in my head, and I can’t explain it”, Margossian told the UK’s JazzWise magazine.

“When I sit down, it’s in my head and I try to hear how it would sound with the band. That’s what guides me. There is no method, it’s really organic.”

“I’ve played classical music so much in my life, it just comes out. I don’t think about it. The same is true for the Arabic and Middle Eastern music.”

When asked which is the most challenging aspect of her fusion of styles, Margossian nominates jazz harmonies.

“I can hear them in my head, but sometimes I have to experiment with it by searching out which one I’m hearing” she admits, laughing. “I analyse what I’ve written AFTER I write it!”

Downbeat magazine reviewed her debut, accurately describing Margossian carving out ‘…an entrancing and dazzlingly unique kaleidoscopic niche’.

Her debut single ‘Ceasefire’ is a wonderful example of Margossian’s clean and sophisticated fusion of disparate influences sewn together with melodic hooks that anchor improvisational moments.

The reedy warmth of Stuart Vandergraaff’s clarinet mirrors Adam Yilmaz’ looping, clattering percussion and Margossian’s circular piano acts as a hypnotic central figure. It’s an immersive and satisfyingly varied experience.

Interestingly, Margossian wrote the song not about conflict, but about the treasured moments of playtime as a child during Beirut’s bloody civil war.

“Lebanon was always unstable. We were very young when the war started, but I clearly remember it”, she explains. “We lived in a basement bunker, and had to spend a lot of time there. We didn’t go to school for a whole year, and it was fun, strangely.”

“I don’t want to say that it was fun during the war, but the ceasefire times were beautiful. We would hear that figure, a melody like the one in our song ‘Ceasefire’, and know it was time to go outside and play soccer.”

“I wish that for the whole world – ceasefire, and peace.”

Her eventual migration from Lebanon back to Armenia set in motion a diaspora that took Margossian from Armenia to Australia to rejoin her brother, and eventually saw her parents move here five years ago.

“When I was studying I got the opportunity to go to Armenia, and it’s the greatest decision I made, because it brought me closer to my heritage and the music. Now Australia is my home. It has been so good to me, and offered me so many opportunities.”

Her debut album ’Transition’ was nominated for an ARIA Award this year for Best World Music Album in 2019.

Her upcoming appearance for the Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival will be Margossian’s second, and the second time she’s ventured into meshing live performance and live studio recording.

The Zela Margossian Quintet will appear live at Sydney’s world class recording facility Studios 301 in Alexandria on November 16th as a feature element of 2019’s Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival program.

Studios 301 in Alexandria are the result SAE millionaire Tom Misner’s vision and acoustician Jochen Veith’s attention to detail in build and sound quality.  Audiotechnology.com recognises the quality of craftsmanship that went into creating the space, describing 301 as “… a studio with impeccable acoustics and a gobsmacking selection of gear that can handle any job.”

The list of performers who’ve produced records with staff at Studios 301 is impressive, featuring names like Amy Shark, Chainsmokers feat. Chris Martin (Coldplay), Julia Stone, Justin Bieber, Guy Sebastian and Jimmy Barnes.

Zela Margossian Quintet performing live in Studios 301 is a rare and exciting opportunity for audiences to experience the music as it’s being made and recorded. Fans will be able to purchase the recording once the performance is mixed and mastered.

The prestigious surrounds of Studios 301 are the perfect setting to experience the complexity and layers of Margossian’s music. Her quintet have a road-hardened musical camaraderie, born over years of international shows.

“I’ve noticed that, after travelling together for performances, no matter how tired we are, we have a sense of calm on stage before the performance starts, which is a great feeling” she says.

“The same happened in Beirut Jazz Festival. It was hectic; we had to wait two hours to perform, and I was worried because I was back in my hometown doing something so different, but it all worked out.”

“For this performance, considering that we are going to be recorded, it will offer that extra rush. Listening back to it will be very special, as it will have the energy of a live performance in it which is different to a studio album recording.”

When asked why she wanted to commit the live performance to record, Margossian says she felt the band’s dynamic live is the strongest evocation of her compositions.

“People have commented after our performances that they could ’feel the energy’. We were approached and asked if we would be interested in playing at Studios 301, and we felt honoured to do it.”

  • Working with Cold Chisel

    Working with Cold Chisel

Studios 301 recently hosted the legendary Cold Chisel recording their new album in Studio 1 with producer Kevin Shirley. Our assistant engineer Owen Butcher who was on the sessions gives his recap of the experience and working alongside arguably the biggest act in Australian Rock.

    written by Owen Butcher

Despite working at a well known studio it’s not every day you get to work with musicians that qualify for legendary status. You meet a lot of young, exciting and upcoming artists, but bands you grew up listening to on the radio are a different breed. You know all the words and how all the songs go, but as you don’t know them personally you make up your own stories and ideas of how they are as individuals. This can be a bit of a shock when they arrive at the studio as there is usually a certain amount of re-adjustment you need to do. Luckily in the case of Cold Chisel the band members are exactly as you’d imagine. Jimmy is excited and keen to get singing, Ian very thoughtful and considered in what he’s going to play, Don is all about the song and attention to detail, Phil is polite but always up for playing a mean bassline, and Charley is caring and always looking to push the songs to their limits. Kevin Shirley was producer on the record, and he liked to be very hands on with the Pro Tools, the band and the songs.

Cold Chisel recording in Studio 1

Fans of the band will be pleased to note that almost everything was tracked live with minimal overdubs. In almost all cases it was everyone in the room playing together. We set them up with Charley out in the large room to give the drums a bit of space, with Phil standing near the drumkit with a baffle in between them. We did this so Phil and Charley could communicate with each other visually through the window in the baffle, but also keep Phil’s headphone mix clear. Ian was also sitting in the same live room with his pedals and amp heads, with the speaker cabinet in a booth. We ended up keeping the booth door open and making what I dubbed a ‘sound corridor’ with baffles and tontine. This isolated the guitar amp enough from the drum mics, but also gave Ian the feedback he needs from the amp on the guitar strings and kept him as close to the drumkit as possible. When playing the upright and grand pianos, Don was in the other booth for isolation purposes. We took the front of the upright piano off to expose all the strings and make the piano less boxy sounding. When we was playing other keyboards he was sitting in the live room with everyone else as we could DI any Wurlitzer and Nord parts. Hammond organ was run through the Lesile cabinet (Don during recording: “You should see what I learned you could do with a Leslie back in the day after carrying it up 4 flights of stairs at the Grafton RSL club!!)”. Jimmy was actually singing in the Control Room. He liked to be near Kevin to discuss ideas, and he sings so loud that the studio monitors don’t cause big enough bleed issues.

Equipment and microphone wise, we used mostly basic microphones for the setup as they’re a straight up rock band (U47 kick drum, 421’s Toms, 57’s on guitars, snare etc), though we did add some Sony High Resolution microphones to the mix as Overheads (Sony C-100) and on the upright piano (Sony ECM-100N) to help give a bit more extended range to the other traditionally less detailed sounding mics. We used a Neumann M149 on vocals because it can take a higher SPL than our other vocal mics. All of these were run through the Neve 88R preamps and EQ, with compression from the 1176 on Vocals, LA2A and Pultec EQP1A on the bass and a touch of Amek 9098 compression on the piano.

After all the main tracking was completed, we finalised the guitar solos for each of the songs with Ian. This was a fun process, where we isolated the amp we were tracking in the booth with the door shut, but split the signal from his amps to another Marshall cabinet which we put near him. Any feedback or FX he could use the Marshall the create them, but they would play out of the amp in the booth. In addition to this, we have Genelec 1031A monitors from Mitchell Rd hung from the ceiling of the line room, so the whole band mix was pumped through that like a PA system as though he was playing at a live concert! This made him at feel more at home during tracking and we all know this produces much better results.

The band were a pleasure to work with. They worked very hard and purposefully throughout, making sure as they went to record what was best for each of the songs to do them justice. I also noted that they can appreciate a nice Whisky or two during any downtime, so they’re always welcome in a studio I’m working in.

‘I Am Woman’ – Helen Reddy Musical Biopic First Look Video

The Studios 301 crew are very excited at the news that the “I am Woman” Helen Reddy biopic had its world premiere on the opening day of the Toronto International Film Festival Sept 5th. The film, which chronicles the life and career of Australian music sensation Helen Reddy filmed on location at Studios 301 and also our Studios Technical Director, Stephen Crane was a hand picked as the audio technical consultant for the scenes filmed in Sydney for the whole movie. Working closely with the crew, Stephen sourced all of the vintage microphones, tape machines and designed the cables and headphones. Stephen and Studios manager Shelley Bishop excitedly worked closely with the prop managers and stage techs over the duration of 3 days filming at the studios.

Starring Evan Peters and Tilda Cobham-Hervey, the movie will be officially released next year and it looks like it’s going to be amazing, following in the footsteps of other artist biopics like Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman, Yesterday and Blinded by the Light.

“Studios 301 Academy is the perfect culmination for anyone who has been studying to break into the recording end of the Music Industry. In my close to 5 decades of working in the Music Industry in A&R and Promotions, I’ve not seen anything that in 5 weeks gives such a comprehensive and thorough insight into the important aspects of operating as an up and coming Engineer/Producer. I look forward to being involved and giving an overview of the key elements needed in creating great music that can rise above the competition in a world that is more crowded than ever before when it comes to talent.”

Songwriter, producer, and singer Nat Dunn was recently honoured by APRA AMCOS with the inaugural position on the organisation’s The 1,000,000,000 List. Presented by Chief Executive Dean Ormston, a position on The 1,000,000,000 List is awarded to APRA AMCOS members who have achieved extraordinary success by accumulating over one billion streams for a particular song.

Dunn celebrated the honour by doing what she loves to do: collaborating on new work with a roster of outstanding songwriters and producers. In partnership with Mushroom Music Publishing, Young & Vicious and APRA AMCOS’ SongHubs initiative, Dunn recently curated a three-day intensive songwriting camp at Sydney’s Studios 301 with artists including Peking Duk, Illy, Mallrat, and Odette, as well as Dunn’s bandmate Nicky Night Time from her artist project NAATIONS (also published through Young & Vicious via Mushroom Music).
